My name is Kelly LeGendre and I’m a licensed acupuncturist who specializes in the treatment of women’s health concerns. I first started treating women with acupuncture nearly 10 years ago (which kind of blows my mind when I think about it!) and have always been especially drawn to issues involving fertility and pregnancy.

As a soon-to-be first time mom, I feel like all my research and practice in this area is finally being put to the test and I’m learning first-hand what works best to keep myself happy and healthy throughout my own pregnancy. I’m also developing a newfound compassion for myself and my patients as we struggle to do the best we can for ourselves and our babies… Often not quite reaching the ideal but always striving to do better.

I started out in my career as an acupuncturist in private practice, spending hours counseling my patients… What I slowly started to realize however, was that because of the way my practice was set up (patients came in on a set schedule, paid a lot of money, and received my undivided attention for at least an hour at a time), many people expected me to act like a doctor. They wanted a diagnosis and then to be “fixed” by my treatments. While my original goal had been to teach the people who came to me to take control of their own healthcare, I was instead just teaching them to rely on my expertise and acupuncture treatments instead of the pills offered by their Western doctors.

In early 2012 I made the decision to open a community acupuncture clinic. This time I set up my clinic in such a way that the responsibility for healing was placed back into the hands of my patients themselves. While I give guidelines on how often they should come in for treatments, it is ultimately up to my patients to listen to their bodies and decide when to come in. By allowing them to determine the length of their own treatments, I teach them to listen to tune in to the way they’re feeling and make decisions based on those perceptions. I even allow everyone to decide how much they would like to pay for each treatment. And while I make lifestyle information available, it is up to each patient to seek it out and decide what to implement.

In the same way, I have decided to start this website to help empower women to take back the control of their own health and the health of their families. While it would be unrealistic to expect that you’ll never again take another pill or will eat perfectly everyday for the rest of your life, I want to provide you with the information you need to learn to listen to your body and respond accordingly.

Pregnancy can be an especially great time for this… If you’re someone who’s used to popping a pain reliever every time you get a headache or an antihistamine when your nose gets stuffy, you’ll soon find that many of these easy fixes are off-limits during pregnancy. If you’re a seasoned veteran who could find her way around the supplements aisle of the closest natural food store blindfolded, you may be wondering which of your herbal standbys are still safe or what you can take to combat unfamiliar symptoms.

While not everything natural is safe to take during pregnancy, there are many things available to you that can greatly increase your happiness and comfort during your pregnancy and postpartum. My sincere hope is that this website will act as a starting point for everyone looking to stay happy and healthy in the safest and most effective way possible throughout their pregnancy. I hope you use this time to learn to tune into your body and discover all the ways it is capable of healing itself when given the opportunity to do so.
